Mark J. Golding became the Leader of the Opposition and President of the People’s National Party in 2020. He is the Member of Parliament for South St. Andrew, having been first elected in 2017. His parliamentary career began with his appointment to the Senate in 2007, where he served as Opposition Spokesperson on Industry and Commerce, and later as Shadow Minister for Justice.
From 2012 to 2016, Mr. Golding served as Jamaica’s Minister of Justice and Chairman of the Legislative Committee of Cabinet. During this period, he oversaw the passage of 121 Acts of Parliament, including the Dangerous Drugs (Amendment) Act 2015, the Disabilities Act 2014, the Public Bodies Management and Accountability (Amendment) Act, 2014, and the Financial Administration and Audit (Amendment) Act, 2014. He has also contributed to national development through committee involvement, including work on the Companies Bill 2004 and service on the task force that led to the establishment of the Financial Services Commission.
Outside of politics, Mr. Golding is a distinguished attorney-at-law with expertise in corporate finance, capital markets, and mergers and acquisitions. A partner at Hart Muirhead Fatta since 1993, he has led major domestic and international financial transactions. He is also a co-founder of Dehring, Bunting & Golding Limited, Jamaica’s first investment bank, and Proven Investments Limited, a publicly listed investment company.
Mr. Golding holds a first-class law degree from the University of Oxford, a Legal Education Certificate from Norman Manley Law School, where he was awarded top student, and a master’s degree in commercial and corporate law from the University of London as a Commonwealth Scholar. He has served on the boards of several leading companies and currently chairs the Mona Rehabilitation Foundation, continuing a legacy of public service and national development.
