His Excellency the Most Honourable Sir Patrick Linton Allen, ON, GCMG, CD, KSt.J, was appointed Governor-General of Jamaica on 26 February 2009, becoming the sixth individual and the fifth and youngest Jamaican to hold the Office since Independence in 1962. Throughout his distinguished career, Sir Patrick has exemplified servant leadership, national development, and a commitment to uplifting the lives of Jamaicans.
Born on 7 February 1951 in Fruitful Vale, Portland, to Ferdinand and Christiana Allen, Sir Patrick’s journey from humble rural beginnings to Jamaica’s highest constitutional office reflects his enduring belief that diligence, integrity, and service can transform lives. He received his early education at Fruitful Vale All-Age School and later attended Moneague Teachers’ College in St. Ann, where he earned a Diploma in Teaching in 1972 and completed a one-year teaching internship certified by the University of West Indies School of Education. His early professional years were spent in education, serving as a third form teacher at the Water Valley All-Age School before accepting the posts of Principal of Robin’s Bay All-Age School, Hillside Primary School, and later Port Maria High School in St. Mary.
Sir Patrick pursued higher education at Andrews University in Michigan, USA, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Religion with Academic Distinction and Honours (Summa Cun Laude) in 1985, a Master of Arts degree in Systematic Theology in 1986, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Education Administration and Supervision in 1998.
A devoted member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Sir Patrick served as a pastor between 1986 and 1991 and later held several senior leadership positions within the Church, including Director of Education for the Adventist school system across Jamaica, The Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, and the Turks and Caicos Islands. He also served as President of the Central Jamaica Conference and later President of the West Indies Union of Seventh-day Adventists, now known as the Jamaica Union Conference of Seventh Day Adventists. His leadership extended to chairman of institutions such as Northern Caribbean University Board, Andrews Memorial Hospital, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency and the Book and Nutrition Company.
As Governor-General, Sir Patrick has championed programmes that inspire excellence, nation-building, and civic pride. He expanded the long-standing Governor-General’s Achievement Awards through the establishment of the Governor-General’s Programme for Excellence (GGPE), incorporating the “I Believe Initiative,” which empowers Jamaicans, especially youth, to realise their full potential through positive values and service. Under his leadership, the Diaspora category of the awards programme was expanded to recognise Jamaicans overseas who have elevated the Jamaican brand internationally. He also established the Governor-General’s Medal of Honour to recognise outstanding service and long serving staff members, as well as Jamaicans whose distinguished service and support assist the Office of the Governor-General and by extension the country, to function with dignity.
Sir Patrick serves as Chancellor of the Societies of Honour, Commander-in-Chief of the Jamaica Defence Force, and Chancellor of the Caribbean Military Academy. His extensive public service also includes appointments to several national boards and oversight bodies. As patron of organisations such as the Jamaica Cancer Society and the Scout Association of Jamaica, among many others, he continues to demonstrate deep commitment to youth empowerment, health advocacy, and community development.
Knighted by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 12 June 2009, Sir Patrick has received numerous honours locally and internationally. He is married to the Most Honourable Lady Allen, Denise Patricia Allen, and together they have three children and ten grandchildren. His life and service remain a testament to faith, humility, excellence, and dedication to Jamaica.
